The Commemorative Air Force is a volunteer group dedicated to preserving the planes and history of WWII. In 1980 dedicated enthusiasts formed a squadron of the Commemorative Air Force in St. Louis, Missouri and in 1981 the squadron was granted wing status becoming the 25th C.A.F. Wing. This self-supporting, all-volunteer group has over 180 members and operates a small WWII Memorabilia Museum. The Missouri Wing of the Commemorative Air Force currently has three operational WW-II aircraft: a North American B-25J Mitchell bomber, a Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, and an Aeronca L-3.
The group moved to its current facility at St. Charles County Smartt Airport in 1984. The field was built in the unprecedented military mobilization prior to World War II. This was one of the best flight-training facilities built by the Navy and American and British pilots practiced landings and takeoffs on eight 800-foot runways that crisscrossed each other in the shape of an eight-pointed star. The facility was renamed after Ensign Joseph G. Smartt, a former trainee who was killed at Pearl Harbor.
