Operated by the New Madrid Historical Museum, the Hart-Stepp House Art Gallery is housed in the oldest home in New Madrid. The home, constructed in 1832, was built by Abraham Augustine in an area southeast of present day New Madrid known as "Old Town." Reminiscent of the vernacular, the home was moved to its present location in order to escape the encroaching waters of the Mississippi River. The home opened as an art gallery in 2010 and features the work of the area's most talented artists including photographers, painters, crafters, and artists of all ages with exhibits changing periodically. The house is also used as a place for workshops and classes, a photo studio, and the home of a photography club for area school students.
