The Saint Louis University Museum of Art provides a variety of intimate galleries and a setting befitting the University's extensive art collection. The museum offers art and artifacts relevant to the long history of Jesuit liberal arts education including works of local, national and internationally acclaimed artists. The museum displays selections from more than 2,000 pieces of family memorabilia and fine art donated to the University by the late Marion Rumsey Cartier, daughter of Pierre Cartier, founder of the internationally renowned Cartier Jewelers. The Saint Louis University Museum of Art features the 2,500 pieces in John and Ann MacLennan Collection of Asian Decorative Art, one of the largest Asian art collections in the Midwest.

The building that houses the museum is designated as a historic landmark for its distinguished architectural character, features, and rich detail. The building was originally built in 1900 as the home of the Saint Louis Club, probably the most exclusive club in the city at the time, at a cost of $320,000. The building was designed in the Beaux Arts style, which was used for prominent urban structures around the turn of the twentieth century. The University purchased the building in 1992 has completely restored the 55,000-square-foot building.

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is one of three art museums on the campus of Saint Louis University. The Saint University Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, and the Cupples House are within blocks of each other and can be easily viewed in a morning or afternoon.
